Job description
The Lead Systems Engineer is responsible for the design, integration, calibration, and data management of all vehicle electronic and data acquisition systems across the Ed Carpenter Racing (ECR) IndyCar program. This role ensures reliable system performance, supports on-track operations, and contributes to ongoing development of team performance through robust analysis, process improvement, and technical leadership., Vehicle Systems Management
- Own the configuration and maintenance of all vehicle electronic systems including sensors, data loggers, and wiring looms.
- Oversee system calibration, CAN bus configuration, data mapping, and signal validation.
- Lead fault diagnosis and resolution during on-track sessions and at the shop.
- Manage firmware, software, and hardware version control across the fleet.
Race & Test Support
- Serve as primary data interface during race weekends; provide accurate, actionable information to engineers and drivers.
- Collaborate with race engineers on performance data analysis, driver feedback correlation, and reliability tracking.
- Support pit-lane systems (dash, steering wheel displays, telemetry, sensors, tire pressure monitoring, etc.).
Development & Integration
- Coordinate integration of new technologies-sensors, control modules, and data tools-working closely with manufacturers, IndyCar, and technical partners.
- Design and implement wiring schematics, system layouts, and testing procedures.
- Ensure compliance with IndyCar technical regulations and ECR internal standards.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Mentor junior engineers and systems technicians in data acquisition, calibration, and diagnostics.
- Work cross-functionally with engine, controls, performance, and software groups to optimize car and operational systems.
- Support long-term R&D projects including durability testing, simulation interfaces, and hybrid system readiness.
Requirements
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Systems Engineering (or equivalent experience).
- 5+ years of experience in motorsport systems engineering (IndyCar, IMSA, F1, F2, WEC, or comparable).
- Deep understanding of motorsport electronics: ECU calibration, data logging (Cosworth, McLaren ATLAS, Pi Toolbox, etc.), CAN bus, and sensor technologies.
- Proven ability to troubleshoot complex electrical and software systems under time pressure.
- Proficient with wiring design software and data analysis tools.
- Strong organizational and communication skills; thrives in fast-paced, team-oriented environments.
Preferred
- Experience with IndyCar data protocols.
