Job description

We're looking for a Senior Applications Engineer to lead the design, development, testing, and deployment of PLC and/or SCADA software systems. In this role, you'll combine technical expertise with leadership skills to mentor junior engineers, maintain software repositories, and ensure compliance with industry standards. You'll work closely with colleagues across engineering, projects, and sales to deliver successful outcomes for our clients.

What you will be doing:

Technical Leadership

  • Design and develop PLC and SCADA software solutions (Allen Bradley, Siemens, Mitsubishi, etc.).
  • Oversee project documentation (FDS, SDS, I/O lists, Test Plans) to ensure compliance with standards and contract requirements.
  • Maintain and improve software repositories, libraries, and templates.
  • Stay up to date with water authority technical standards and specifications.

Mentorship and Team Development

  • Provide guidance and support to junior engineers and apprentices.
  • Deliver structured training on PLC/SCADA programming and design methodologies.
  • Contribute to team development and succession planning.

Project Delivery

  • Manage and deliver projects on time, within budget, and to specification.
  • Attend sales handovers to clarify project scope and technical requirements.
  • Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and planning meetings.

Quality and Continuous Improvement

  • Conduct code reviews and ensure documentation meets quality and regulatory standards.
  • Drive improvements in engineering practices, including automation and innovation.
  • Align with the Company's Business Quality Management System.

Customer and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Act as a technical point of contact during project execution and commissioning.
  • Attend customer sites when required, demonstrating professionalism and technical excellence.
  • Develop customer-focused solutions that meet operational, safety, and compliance needs.

Requirements

  • Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Extensive hands-on experience in PLC and/or SCADA development, including:
  • Allen Bradley, Siemens, Mitsubishi, Rockwell, and/or Omron PLC platforms.
  • HMI and SCADA systems (Wonderware, Rockwell, Siemens).
  • Strong understanding of Water Authority and WIMES standards or similar frameworks.
  • Proven experience in PLC programming, fault finding, and system integration.
  • Ability to deliver training on PLC programming, networking, and industrial communication protocols (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus, Profinet).
  • Experience with industrial networking, cybersecurity principles, and system architecture design.
  • Competence with version control systems (e.g., Git, SVN).
  • Excellent documentation skills (FDS, SDS, Test Plans, Reports).
  • Commercial awareness and customer-facing experience.
  • Advanced troubleshooting and analytical skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Commitment to quality, safety, and continuous improvement.
