Job description
We're seeking a highly skilled and proactive Database Administrator to own, secure, and optimise our clients data infrastructure. This role is central to ensuring the availability, performance, and integrity of their Microsoft SQL Server, Azure SQL, PostgreSQL environments, and Azure-based storage platforms. The ideal candidate is comfortable working across both traditional database administration and modern cloud infrastructure.
Key Database Administrator: Responsibilities
- Continuously monitor database and system performance, identify bottlenecks, respond to evolving workloads, and implement proactive tuning strategies to ensure reliable and efficient data access.
- Manage data-related resources within the Azure Portal, with a strong focus on Azure Storage and data retention across multiple storage tiers; exposure to ADLS, Azure Databricks, and/or Elastic is advantageous.
- Oversee disk allocation, I/O performance, and storage scaling, identifying and implementing opportunities to improve efficiency and performance.
- Design and maintain robust security controls, including encryption at rest and in transit; manage database and storage security boundaries and ensure alignment with industry best practices and regulatory requirements.
- Define, implement, and maintain comprehensive backup, retention, and recovery strategies to support business continuity and disaster recovery objectives.
Requirements
- Strong, hands-on experience with SQL Server, including security configuration, maintenance plans, performance tuning, monitoring, integrity checks, schema management, alerting, and capacity planning.
- Practical experience working within the Azure Portal, including managing Azure Storage (Blob, Files, Disks, ADLS Gen2) and supporting broader cloud infrastructure; familiarity with Azure Databricks and Elastic is a plus.
- Proven experience managing virtual disks and cloud-based storage tiers, including long-term data retention strategies in ADLS.
- Deep understanding of SQL backup and restore processes, data retention and archival policies, and the ability to provide reporting and visibility on data protection practices to the wider business.
Desirable Skills:
- Day-to-day administration of Microsoft SQL Server, including installation, configuration, upgrades, and patching.
- Experience supporting Databricks or other cloud-based analytics, big data, or ETL platforms.
- Business Intelligence Exposure: Familiarity with BI and reporting tools such as Power BI or Tableau, particularly for supporting data and performance investigations.
- Awareness of non-relational data stores such as Cosmos DB or MongoDB.
- Understanding of data governance principles and experience with tools like Microsoft Purview for data discovery, classification, and compliance.
